JUNIOR SCIENCE SOCIETY

The Objective

  • To keep in touch with the latest developments in the field of science in the 21st century not forgetting what has been achieved in the past.
  • To evaluate how new discoveries affect man and environment.
  • Maintain contact with similar science associations in other schools and institutions and share experiences through discussions, debates, quiz programmes and speeches.

Events in 2002/2003

  • The society organized a science day in collaboration with the Junior Science Society of S.Thomas College Mt.Lavinia.
  • The important lectures were given to improve the science knowledge of the students.
  • They maintain the wall chart through which they inform the others of new scientific news and they also maintain a pond in the school.
  • The students were able to enhance their knowledge by visiting the Museum.
  • They held a poster competition on different scientific topics.
  • There was a debate on a science topic.

Future Plans

  • Create an awareness of the correct use of the limited natural resources air, water, soil and plants.
  • Enlighten the students on the environmental hazards we would face if these resources were misused.
  • Create favourable attitudes in the students to safeguard the environment.
  • Promote the creative abilities of students.
  • Create an interest in the students about astronomy.

SENIOR SCIENCE SOCIETY

 
 

The Objective

1.) To promote the interest in various exciting fields of science.
2.) To help the students to acquire a wider knowledge and competence in the field of science.
3.) To create an interest to explore and understand the environment.

LAW CIRCLE

 

The objective

  • To create awareness among students of their legal rights and obligations.
  • Familiarize students with current legal issues.
  • Enhance debating skills of students.

INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION SOCIETY

Events in 2003/2004

  • Organized a Workshop for the members of the ICT society to enhance the IT skills in January 2004.
  • “Information Technology Day – 2004” was held on the 30th of January 2004 at the college auditorium. This event was graced by the presence of Dr. Priyantha Kumarawadu ,Senior Lecture of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology.
  • The theme for the day was ”Striding to the future with IT”.
  • The most highlighted event of the day was the donation of a computer to the Velikulam JGH School in Vavuniya and they highly appreciated our attempt.

ENVIRONMENTAL SOCIETY

The motto of the Society is “ The Environment Protects Us - Let Us Protect The Environment ”

The Objective is to convey the message through the children to the adults that all living beings depend on the environment for their survival and that it is their prime duty to protect the environment

Events in 2002/2003

  • 25/02/2002 – Collection of used Exercise books for recycling.
    Participated in the above pilot project of the Environmental Ministry. The National Paper Company has requested the Ministry to assist them to establish a system to collect the used Exercise books of the school children for recycling; and produce new Exercise books.
  • 14/03/2002 – Awards Ceremony
    35 members of the Pioneer Brigade (a programme conducted throughout the island by the Central Environmental Authority of Sri Lanka.) of the College Environmental Society received their second badge “Haritha-Warna” award at a ceremony held in the school auditorium. Professor Sarath Kotagama of the University of Colombo was the Chief Guest at the ceremony.
  • 30/03/2002 – National Environmental Camp – 2002
    3 of our members from the Senior Pioneer Brigade participated in the National Environmental Camp 2002.
  • 13/11/2002 – Lecture on Bio-Diversity
    By an environmentalist of the Bio-Diversity unit of the Central Environmental Authority.
  • 20/03/2003 – Green Awareness 2003
    A youth and environment campaign organized by the TNL Action and Social Thought 89.2 sponsored by the Sisu Udanaya from the Peoples Bank. We had a lecture by a well known environmentalist of the IUCN; and will be participating in an exciting competition.
  • 12/02/2003 – Exhibition ‘Sagara-Soba' at the British Council.
  • 29/03/2003, 21/05/2003 – Workshops on ‘Healthy Schools' project
    Participated in the workshops on Healthy Schools Project' of the ‘Colombo Municipal Council'.
  • 24/05/2003 – Participated in an open discussion about Environmental Implications of Globalization; which was organized by the “Ruk-Rakaganno .
  • At present we are engaged in -
    1. Planting and maintaining the garden behind the western –boundary building.
    2. Making compost in compost barrels supplied to us by the Vortex Industries (PVT) Ltd.
    3. "Healthy Schools" Project.
    4. Landscaping (The school garden).

Future Plans

We have already joined the “Healthy Schools” project of the Colombo Municipal Council under the Patronage of Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam. Recently our members went for a workshop at Galle Face Hotel which was organized by an eminent panel of doctors from the Medical Faculty chaired by Professor Saroj Jayasinghe. We hope to implement this project in school this term with our members which will demand a lot of hard work; in keeping school premises clean. We have to obtain 80% or above for the project in order to become a “Healthy School.”

DRUG PREVENTION SOCIETY


The Objective

  • To enhance the public awareness about the drug prevention.
  • To create a “World Without Drugs”.


Events in 2002/2003

  • Participated for a seminar jointly conducted by the Police Department and SLANA under the theme “How to make aware about the drugs among the school community”.
  • Participated for a project conducted by SLANA to enhance the knowledge and the awareness among the students in Colombo schools. This was a good opportunity to share our views with other students to raise a collective voice against the “Drug Abusing”.
  • We are maintaining a notice board daily to update the knowledge of the children about drugs. Simultaneously, we are presenting morning speeches under different themes relevant to drug prevention.
  • Attended to an interview conducted by the Police Narcotics Bureau.

Future Plans

  • In pursuance of the above objectives the society proposes to undertake various activities such as conducting educative seminars about drug prevention in coming years.
  • We are planning to present our notice board in an innovative way-
  • We are putting much effort to conduct a society meeting under the theme of drug prevention in the senior section society meetings, which will be in the near future.

HEALTHY SCHOOLS PROJECTS

The Objectives

This project, which is conducted by the Public Health Department, is aimed at improving the psycho-social and physical environment of our school.


Events in 2002/2003

  • All waste material in both plastic and paper form were sent to the relevant authorities for recycling purposes.
  • The school canteen is maintained in hygienic condition while also adhering to strict safety regulations. There is close supervision to monitor activities.
  • Better washroom facilities were provided for the children.
  • Necessary attention was given to secure classrooms with sufficient ventilation and lighting conditions.
  • Maintaining an overall healthy environment within classrooms and buildings.
  • The Healthy Schools Project Committee and Staff Coordinators participated in workshops that helped to enhance awareness on relevant areas.

Future Plans

  • Have better traffic control along the roadways leading to the school entrances.
  • The school washrooms are to have more pedal bins.
  • Improving the schools eco-environment by planting more trees and filing the compound with landscapes wherever possible.
  • Bringing about a quality circle concept for the school canteen to monitor hygienic conditions.
  • Have better drainage systems to avoid any breeding of mosquitoes.

SENIOR LITERARY, MUSIC & DRAMA (L.M.D.) SOCIETY

Future Plans

  • To make English Language and Literature learning interesting and more meaningful and help the students to develop more positive attitudes in learning English through active participation in a rich, stress free atmosphere.
  • To stimulate the students to think in new ways to gain experience and develop good attitudes and healthy values in life.
  • To help gain better knowledge, to function successfully in the ‘Global Village'.
  • To maintain contact with similar L.M.D. societies in other institutions, share experience through discussions, debates, dramas and speeches.

  • The English Day in October 2002
  • The films
    1. Harry Potter, Lords of the Ring to raise funds
  • At "Avurudu Pola" a food and a game stall .
  • Publication of The Musaeus Miscellany, the newspaper.


Future Plans

  • Inter School Debating Competition

  • A Seminar on music, drama and literature to enhance aesthetic values.

SENIOR ASTRONOMY SOCIETY

The Objective

  • To foster keen interest in the modern discoveries and achievements in the field of Astronomy.
  • To give opportunities to enhance their knowledge, talents, participation, organizing skills, team spirit, creativity, new discoveries and leadership.


Events in 2002/2003

  • Conducted an Inter House Debating Competition with topics related to Astronomy.
  • Participated in Inter School Astronomy Quiz programmes.
  • A combined ‘Science and Astronomy Day' was held in 2002 with the participation of all the members.
  • Maintained a notice board displaying the new discoveries etc.


Future Plans

  • To organize a night camp to observe the night sky.
  • To hold seminars and lectures to widen the knowledge in modern discoveries in the field of Astronomy.

SENIOR WESTERN BAND

The Objective

  • To become the best band among schools.

  • The Senior Western Band is planning to organize a band festival in future.

COMMERCE & BANK SOCIETY

The objective

  • To create awareness of modern trends in internal and international trade commerce and banking.
  • To promote saving habits among students.

Events Done in 2002/2003

  • The Merc Bank was opened on the 14th of February 2002. It's first anniversary was celebrated on the Annual Commerce Day of Musaeus College.
  • An Inter-School Quiz was held on 6th February 2003.
  • The Annual Commerce Day was held on the 14th February 2003.
  • The members of the Commerce Society participated in many events organized by the Commerce Societies of other leading schools in Colombo.

Future Plans

  • Striving to be the leading school bank in Sri Lanka
  • Commerce Day to be held annually.

The objective

  • Gives all the encouragement to students to enhance their artistic talents.

ST. JOHN'S AMBULANCE BRIGADE

The Objective:

Children are trained to give first aid at an emergency. Theory and practical classes are conducted weekly.

Events in 2002/2003:

  • New members are enrolled annually.
  • First aid provided at all school functions.
  • Alms Giving on Poson Poya last year at A.C.W.B.C.
  • 1st and 2nd class examination were held..

Future Plans:

Cadets who have passed the examination will be enrolled, as members.

SOCIAL WORKERS CLUB

The Objective

  • To create an environment that fosters personal growth, team-work and respect through counseling.
  • To enhance the quality of life by inculcating values.


Events in 2002/2003

  • Donation of library books to Podujaya College, Moratuwa – Sep. 2002
  • Donation of clothes to the blind school – Oct.2002
  • Shramadanaya - Shikshana College, Ratmalana – Dec. 2002
  • Donation of uniforms to needy children at our school. – Jan. 2003
  • Donation of clothes, notes, new books to flood victims – June 2003
  • Conducted a pola to raise funds for the club. – Feb. 2003
  • Workshop on Enhanced Management of Clubs and Societies and Leadership Qualities, this is a joint project in association with St. Thomas' U.N. Club for 150 participants from Colombo schools.

Future Plans

  • A Raffle Draw to raise funds to donate a tube well to Welikada prison which will cost around Rs.17,500/-.
  • To conduct a workshop on Leadership annually.

MATHS SOCIETY

The Objective

Create an interest in Mathematics among students in general and to enhance the aptitude and inspire ‘Mathematical Thinking' among the enthusiastic students.


Events in 2002/2003

  • Inter-House Math Quiz was held in 2002 July.
  • Organized the Science, Mathematics & Astronomy Day -11th October 2002.
  • Participated at Inter-School Math Quiz programmes and became runners-up at competitions organized by Ananda College in June 2002 as well as Royal College in October 2002


Future Plans

  • Organize an Inter-School Math Quiz.
  • Hold lectures on mathematical aspects.
  • Hold an Inter-House Quiz and coach a Quiz team to participate at outside competitions.

BUDDHIST SOCIETY


The Objective

Mould the minds of our children according to the great Buddhist philosophy.

  • Dane & chanting Seth Pirith for School Birthday & every occasion it is needed.
  • Arranging Sil programs connected to important poya days for every grade.
  • Arranging Dhamma Sermons for every poya week.
  • Sri Mahabodi Pooja connected to Shanthi Padanama Bauddhaloka Mawatha.
  • Donating funds for disable citizens.
  • Donating building funds for Temples.

Events in 2002/2003

  • Donations towards the Flood victims were made on 29th May 2003. Hiniduma, Thavalama, Udugama, Neluwe were some of the centers.
  • On 7th of March 2003, dry rations, clothes and stationary items were donated to the Lakwasi Ballika Niwasaya, Kadawala Wewa, and Pollonaruwa.
  • Our society underwent a special project on donating dry rations, stationary items, clothes and school bags to the people living in Thanthirimalle. The students gave a helping hand in this worthy process.

Future Plans

  • Helping students at Neluwe Sri Dhamma Loka Pirivena.
  • Helping the Samanera priest at the Pirivena.
  • Donating books for the library at Dhammaloka Pirivena.
  • Arranging debates on Dhamma Topics
